Enhance your appearance with dermal fillers
Dermal fillers can be used to soften lines, wrinkles, folds and scars. In addition, dermal fillers can replace volume which may have been lost with age in areas such as the lips, cheeks, and temples. Women with naturally small lips can also use dermal fillers for lip enhancement.
Dr Szalay has performed several thousand dermal filler treatments.
Dermal fillers are made of a substance which occurs naturally in the human body and they provide an immediate result.
Dermal fillers can have the following uses:
With natural ageing, the lips can become thinner and lose definition. As this occurs, the lips may look small or deflated in comparison to the rest of the face. Some patients complain of the lips appearing too thin and stretched, especially when they smile. Sometimes, small lines can result in “bleeding” of lipstick.
A lip rejuvenation treatment aims to reduce lip lines and restore both definition and lost volume. Lip lines are diminished by adding the filler into the lines. Lip definition is improved by injecting the filler into the lip border where the skin meets the red parts of the lips as well as the corners of the lips. Using filler in these areas provides some volume enhancement and additional lip volume is achieved by adding filler to the red parts of the lips.
Many patients are satisfied with their result when 1 ml of filler is used. Additional lip volume can be obtained when 2mls is used.

Nasolabial Fold Softening
The nasolabial folds are the creases or folds that run down between the nose and the mouth. With ageing, these folds become deeper as fat is lost from the cheeks and the cheeks descend.
Treatment of the nasolabial folds aims at softening the folds. Filler is added to the folds, making them less deep and less noticeable. Patients with minor folds may be satisfied with their results after the use of 1ml of dermal filler. Patients with deeper folds may require 2mls or possibly more.
Marionette Fold Softening
The marionette folds are the creases or folds at the corner of the mouth. With ageing, these folds deepen and can give a downturned or “sad” appearance to the mouth.
Treatment of the marionette folds aims at making them less deep, improving the appearance of the corner of the mouth. Some patients will be satisfied with their results after the use of 1ml of dermal filler but other patients with deeper folds may require more.
Smile Line Softening
The smile lines or creases are positioned to the sides of the mouth and are more noticeable when smiling. The aim of the treatment is to soften these lines and usually only 1ml of dermal filler is required.
With ageing, the cheeks flatten, and the skin may begin to sag. This is caused by a natural loss of volume in the cheek area, which can take on a hollow appearance.
The aim of cheek enhancement is to restore youthful fullness and definition to the cheeks. This is achieved by injecting filler into the cheeks. The amount of product used can range from 2mls to 6mls or more.
Acne Scars and other sunken scar softening
Some acne scars and other scars can have a sunken appearance. Dermal fillers can be helpful to fill out the sunken areas resulting in a smoother appearance to the skin. Usually only 1ml is required.
Nasal Bridge Enhancement
Dermal filler can be helpful to augment a sunken area of the nasal bridge as well as smoothing out small bumps or other irregularities. Usually only 1 ml is required.
In some patients, dermal fillers can be used to reduce the appearance of sagging (jowls) along the jawline. In addition, they can be used to augment “weakness” of the angle of the jaw. These treatments improve definition of the jawline. The amount of product used can range from 2mls to 6mls or more.
With ageing and sometimes weight loss, the temples may appear sunken and hollow. Dermal fillers can be used to restore youthful fullness to this area. The amount of dermal filler used will usually range from from 2mls to 4 mls.
Sometimes the chin may appear recessed. Chin augmentation can improve a persons “side on” profile. Dermal fillers can be used as a non-invasive method of chin enhancement. The amount of product used can range from 2mls to 4mls or more.
What can I expect from the treatment?
Often an injection is used to numb the area to be treated. The dermal filler used is also mixed with local anaesthetic during the manufacturing process, further improving the comfort of the treatment. Immediate results are obtained following treatment. Usually it is possible to return to normal activities straight away, although some temporary swelling or bruising can occur, particularly when the lips are enhanced.
How long do dermal fillers last?
The dermal filler used at our practice is a new generation filler which is cross-linked and FDA approved for longer lasting results.
The results can last from 6 to 24 months depending on the thickness of the product and where it is placed. Lip enhancement usually lasts closer to 6 months because it is an area constantly moving. Lip line, nasolabial and marionette area treatments usually last about 6 to 12 months. Cheek, temple and jawline enhancement usually lasts about 12 to 24 months because of the thicker product used in these areas.
