How is the eyelid surgery procedure performed?
Eyelid surgery is performed under local anaesthetic, in combination with sedation.
Excess skin or fat from the upper eyelid is removed by making a small incision in the upper eyelid, which heals with time to leave a thin white line. Excess fat from the lower eyelid is removed by a small incision inside of the eyelid. Fractional laser resurfacing can safely tighten the lower eyelid skin.
Preparing for the procedure
For three weeks leading up to the procedure, it’s important to avoid substances which can thin out the blood, including aspirin, Vitamin E and various other herbal supplements. Alcohol and smoking should also be avoided. More detailed pre-operative instructions are provided at your initial consultation.
How long is the recovery period?
Following the procedure, some swelling and bruising is common for a few days. Sutures are usually removed after six days and most patients feel comfortable facing the general public again after approximately 10 days.

- The initial consultation with Dr Szalay costs $75.00
- Upper eyelid surgery costs $2200
- Lower eyelid surgery costs $3300 (removal of fat)
- For both: $4400
- Laser tightening of lower eyelid costs $1100 (necessary if fat is removed)
Please be aware that if you have excessive skin on the outer part of your upper eyelids, you may need a brow lift instead of, or as well as, upper eyelid surgery.
Some patients do not need fat removed from the lower eyelid and only require skin tightening with the laser. If so, the cost will range from $1,100 to $1,650, depending on whether the upper eyelid is performed at the same time.
Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner
