How the breast augmentation procedure works

Breast augmentation is performed at a licensed day hospital. An anaesthetist will present and will use a general anaesthetic. Typically, bleeding is minimal and there is usually little if any bruising. After surgery you are typically kept in a recovery area for about two hours before you can go home.

How long is the recovery period?

Immediately after your surgery, you will be taken into a recovery area to be closely monitored following surgery. The nursing staff  will put your support bra at this time, helping to minimise swelling and support the breasts as they heal. The procedure is a day case so you home a few hours after surgery. It is important to see Dr Szalay at his Spring Hill practice the following day so he can check on your progress.

There will be some pain the first night and we give you pain medication for this. The pain typically settles over the next few days.

It is normal for your breasts to feel tight and appear swollen and “top heavy” over the first few days. The tightness and swelling reduce over the first week but it can take 3 months for your breasts to settle into position.

Usually you will be able to return to work after 7 days unless your work involves heavy lifting, in which case you may require an extra week.

Dr Szalay will discuss what to expect during your recovery as part of your consultation and we will provide you with detailed pre and post operative instructions.

Important information before your breast augmentation

  • You need to avoid alcohol for two weeks before the procedure as this can cause bleeding
  • If you are a smoker, you need to stop 3 weeks before the procedure
  • You need to bring in all your medications that we have prescribed

Important information after your breast augmentation

  • Only take the medication as advised by the Precision Cosmetic Surgery team.
  • You will need someone to drive you home and stay with you overnight.
  • You can’t do strenuous exercise for three weeks.

Cost

The cost for a consultation with Dr Szalay is $75.
The cost of implants is from $6490 for sizes up to 500cc.

The above costs include the hospital and anaesthetist. The only additional cost is the script for medication.

Risks

As with any surgery, there are possible risks involved with breast augmentation. Dr Szalay will discuss these with you during your consultation. A list of possible risks is here.
